Masai Mara Photography Tours: Unforgettable Wildlife Encounters
I’ll be honest. My very first trip to the Mara was a photographic nightmare. Yes, I had the right gear, but I was constantly at the wrong spot, battling poor light, and stuck behind a convoy of other cars. Frustrating? Beyond frustrating. And that is why I started these tours: to help you avoid the same mistakes I made and actually experience the Mara the way it’s meant to be experienced.
Ready? Let’s get into it
Why Our Masai Mara Photography Safari
Yes, I know: there are countless other safari companies offering these very same tours, and some even cheaper. But wait… I have spent almost nine years guiding photographers here and learned what works and what doesn’t. I know- through countless tries and errors- the difference between a ‘wow’ and ‘nice’ photo.
And… It starts with the vehicle. We offer custom-designed 4×4 safari vehicles with photography platforms. We also have a 6-person capacity rule for our vehicles, meaning we carry a maximum of 6 photographers per vehicle, so there’s plenty of space for your gear.
But the real secret? Great photography is all about the light and access. I know where to be when that golden-hour light first hits the plains and how to position the vehicle so you get the perfect shot every time.
We also have access to exclusive locations away from the crowds because there’s nothing worse than finding a leopard only to be boxed in by twenty other vans.
Best Time for Photography Tours in the Masai Mara
Everyone wants to know the perfect time to visit. The simple answer? It all comes down to what you want to capture. While the Masai Mara is great for photography all year round, some seasons are better than others:
Migration Season (July-October)
You’ve probably seen this one on TV. The chaos. The drama. It’s amazing! It’s undoubtedly the best time for photography tours in the Masai Mara. So, when does it happen? From July to September, that’s when. At this time, millions of wildebeest cross the Mara River, creating dramatic scenes for action photography. This period offers:
- Dramatic river crossings with intense predator action* Golden savannah landscapes with massive herds
- Big cat hunting opportunities
- Clear skies for sunrise/sunset compositions
Green Season (November-June)
I love, love, love the green season. It’s my tiny little secret. After the rains, the Mara transforms into this beautiful, lush landscape with little adorable wildlife running around everywhere. Also, the birds, at this time, are in their full breeding plumage.
The best part? The crowds are gone. So it’s just you, the landscape, and your camera.

What to Expect on Your Masai Mara Photo Tour
We start in the morning. Very early in the morning, at around 5:30 AM. Now, this time is great for a couple of reasons. One, the golden hour, and two, the wildlife is at its most active.
We’ll spend the better part of the morning tracking, positioning for the best light, and waiting for action. And when it finally happens, boy, is it a sight to see. I captured one of my best shots early this year. It was a lone cheetah sprinting across the golden grass, his piercing gaze locked directly at the camera. We had spent over an hour setting up for this shot, and I am glad we did.
We have packed meals, so there’s no need to rush back, and in the evenings, we often gather for editing sessions.
Let’s Talk Gear: Photography Equipment and Expertise
While we welcome photographers of all levels on our photography tours, we recommend bringing:
- DSLR or mirrorless camera with telephoto (at least 300mm)
- Wide-angle lens for landscape
- Extra batteries and memory cards
- Laptop for editing
Don’t have professional equipment? Not to worry, we have equipment rental options.
