In short, a Masai Mara game drive is an adventure that allows you to explore the reserve’s stunning landscapes in specially designed vehicles, providing an opportunity to see animals in their natural habitat. The term “game drive” has its roots in hunting expeditions, but modern Masai Mara safaris are deeply rooted in conservation and sustainable tourism. As a local guide once said, “Going on a wildlife drive through the conservancy is like entering another world, a chance to see big and small against the backdrop of an untouched wilderness.”

What Is the Best Game Drive Vehicle in the Masai Mara?

Hint: One question I usually get from my guests is which vehicle is best for game drives in the Masai Mara: a safari van, a 4×4 safari land cruiser, or an open-sided safari vehicle. Now, in Most cases, I choose the 4×4 Safari Land Cruiser, like the one shown in the photo below. The car has benefits over both the safari van and open jeeps, in that a safari Land Cruiser can access all parts of the park, just like the open jeep. However, unlike the open safari jeep, the 4×4 safari Land Cruiser can be used for transfers from Nairobi to the Masai Mara or even between destinations. It also shields the guests from direct sunlight as well as excess wind and dust.

This makes it the ideal game drive vehicle, especially for guests who want to do a full-day safari. It’s important to note that in most cases, open safari vehicles are used for game drives by hotels. These game drives are usually short, 2-3 hours in the morning and again 2 hours in the evening. Most hotels, including Angama Mara, Entim Mara, and Basecamp Masai Mara, offer shared game drives in small groups of 4-6 people in their open jeeps.

While you can opt for Private use of the open-sided safari vehicles provided by the hotel, the rate is often too high. Mostly about USD 500 per day, compared to 4×4 safari vehicles, which cost about USD 280 per day. Additionally, open safari jeeps are not ideal for families with small children, as they could easily fall from the moving vehicle.

Now, the safari van, also known as a tour van, is a budget-friendly invention. It’s the ideal game drive vehicle for budget-conscious guests. The main difference between a 4×4 safari Land Cruiser and a safari van is that the Land Cruiser is more comfortable, and it can access rough or muddy parts of the park that a safari van might not be able to access.

Best Places for Masai Mara Wildlife Viewing

The Masai Mara ecosystem is diverse, with varied landscapes and high concentrations of wildlife. Here are the key areas known for excellent game viewing:

Masai Mara National Reserve: Located south of the Mara River, this is the hub of activity, especially famous for the Great Migration between July and October, making it a top destination for safari lovers. The reserve, managed by Narok County, has regulations in place to enhance your wildlife experience.
Mara Triangle: Located in the northwestern part of the reserve, the Mara Triangle is an excellent option for those looking for potentially less crowded game viewing. It’s known for its good wildlife habitats and is suitable for self-drive safaris (though local guides are highly recommended for the best experience).
Sekenani Gate Area: As the main entrance to the Masai Mara, Sekenani Gate has many accommodation options. The surrounding areas are rich in wildlife and offer convenient game drives near your lodge, like Mara Sarova Game Camp, Keekorok Lodge, and Mara Sweet Acacia Lodge.
Talek Gate Region: Located on the northwestern side, the Talek Gate region features open savannahs that border the famous Talek River. This area features numerous safari camps, including Mara Intrepids Tented Camp, Julia’s River Camp, and Fig Tree Camp, all of which offer excellent wildlife drives.
Mara North Conservancy: For a more exclusive and intimate safari experience, the Mara North Conservancy stands out. With limited vehicle numbers, you’ll enjoy less crowded private safaris and unique experiences, such as night game drives (not permitted in the central reserve), which are particularly beneficial for sightings of the endangered African wild dogs. Other conservancies, such as Olare Motorogi and Naboisho, offer similar exclusive game-viewing experiences.

Hint: When it comes to game drives, I recommend doing at least 2 nights in the central park (Masia Mara National Reserve) and 2 nights in the conservancies. The 2 nights in the conservancies are essential, as you will be allowed to participate in both night game drives and guided walking safaris, which are prohibited in the central park. NB: Masaimarasafari.travel Ltd is also able to organize Masai Mara horseback riding safaris for both guests staying in the central reserve and conservancies. However, the safaris themselves are done inside the conservancies. The main park does not allow horseback riding safaris.

Timing is Everything: Best Times for Masai Mara Game Drives

The time of day makes a big difference in wildlife activity and viewing:

Morning Game Drives (6:00 AM – 9:00 AM): These early excursions are ideal for spotting predators like lions, leopards, and cheetahs, as they are most active during the cooler hours. The soft morning light is also perfect for wildlife photography, and birdlife is at its best at dawn.
Mid-Day Safaris (9:00 AM – 12:00 PM): As the sun rises higher, animals seek shade or congregate around waterholes, making it perfect for viewing herds of herbivores. Look out for birds of prey soaring on thermal air currents.
Afternoon Game Drives (3:30 PM – 6:30 PM): As the temperature cools in the late afternoon, animal activity picks up again. Predators start to stir, and herbivores emerge to graze. The “golden hour” before sunset is magical and perfect for wildlife photography.
Night Safaris: Available only in the private conservancies surrounding the main reserve, night safaris offer a thrilling look into the nocturnal world. These specialized drives, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and priced at around usd 220 per person, allow you to see aardvarks, leopards, and honey badgers.

Open-Sided Land Cruisers: These 4×4 vehicles with open sides offer the best views and an immersive safari experience, perfect for wildlife photography and close encounters.
Closed-Body 4×4 Safari Jeeps: The reliable and comfortable Toyota Land Cruiser, the standard for safari transportation, has pop-up roofs for great standing views and protection from the elements.
Safari Vans: A more budget-friendly option, Toyota Hiace safari vans provide reliable transportation for wildlife viewing, featuring pop-up roof hatches. Less off-road capable than Land Cruisers, they still provide good visibility.

Safari Costs and Booking

The cost of Masai Mara game drives varies:

Vehicle: As mentioned above, the rental cost varies depending on the vehicle.
Season: High season (June to October and December to February) is more expensive for park fees and vehicle hire. The low season is more affordable.
Private vs. Shared: Private vehicles and guides are more expensive than joining a group tour.
Duration: Full-day wildlife tours will cost more than half-day excursions.
Park Fees: Don’t forget the daily park entry fees for the Masai Mara National Reserve, which can be $100 between January and Jun and $200 between July and December per adult per day. Conservancy fees may apply. When selecting a tour operator, ensure that you choose a reputable and licensed company. Planning Your Masai Mara Safari

To get the most out of your Masai Mara:

Best Time to Visit: While the dry season (June to October) is ideal for wildlife viewing and coincides with the Great Migration, the Masai Mara has resident wildlife throughout the year. In particular, I recommend visiting between Mid-July and August for the best chance to see the dramatic Mara River crossing. Also, if you’re planning to visit the Masai Mara at this time, it is advisable to book your trip approximately one year in advance. Well, most online resources suggest 6 months, but by then, most of the best hotels will be fully booked, and the best rooms will have been taken.
What to Pack for Game Drives: Neutral-colored clothing, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), binoculars, camera equipment with zoom lenses, a light jacket for early mornings, a reusable water bottle, and snacks. Although rarely mentioned, note that most hotels do not provide a dental kit. Please organize to bring one from home, or you can buy at the Naivas Supermarket along the way to Masai Mara. I normally make a stop there so guests can do a last minute shopping for any item they night have forgotten to pack. Except in special cases where need be, do not park fruits or food stuff. Hotels provide these and you will find delicious meal regardless of your diet preferences.
Getting to Masai Mara: You can get to the Mara by a 5-6 hour drive from Nairobi through the Great Rift Valley or a 45-minute flight from Wilson Airport in Nairobi. Flying allows you to maximize your time on game drives. Please note that although it’s possible to board matatu, (public transport vehicles) from Nairobi to Masai Mara, this is not a viable option even for guest on a budget due to safety and logistics reasons. Additionally, the Masai Mara Park does not permit private vehicles (including 4×4 SUVs) within the park. Only specially equipped game drive vehicles are allowed to access the park.
