What it Costs and How to Book It

Okay, let’s talk about the price. I’m not going to lie, my eyes did a little double-take at first. Prices range from $410 to $510 per adult; children’s rates apply. But… This is more than just a ride. Let me tell you what it includes;

  • Lodge pick-up: They picked me from my lodge in the wee hours of the morning when it was still dark. The drive, from the lodge to the launch site, was a game drive in itself, and I got to see wildlife like zebras, elephants, and dik-dik.
  • Then came the flight, an hour of pure magic. Now, this one was unforgettable. I could see the herds moving (it was during the migration) and lots of other wildlife, including lions, hippos, and gazelles. The landscape views were incredible, too. 
  • When we landed, a delicious champagne breakfast awaited. We’re talking tables spread in linen cloths, fresh fruit, bacon, sausages, and eggs, slow-cooked by the balloon’s burners. The breakfast was served in the heart of the bush
  • After the breakfast, we got another mini-drive back to our lodge.

Tips for an Unforgettable Balloon Safari

If you’re going to do it, here’s my advice:

  • Dress in layers – mornings can be cold, but it warms up quickly
  • Bring a camera with extra batteries. You don’t want to be the person whose camera dies 20 minutes in. It happened to the guest standing beside me, and I could see the pain in her eyes. 
  • Book in advance – Especially during peak migration season when it’s busy. I was there during the migration season, and it was packed. People who tried to book at the last minute were turned away. 
  • Be prepared for early rising. Yeah, I know. 4 AM sounds pretty intense, but it’s totally worth it (this is coming from a sworn enemy of alarm clocks). The predawn start is essential to catch the sunrise
  • Familiarize yourself with safety procedures. Listen attentively to your pilot’s briefing

Why I’ll Tell Everyone to Do This

I’ve been to countless game drives, and they’re amazing. But this… this is on a level of its own. 

I loved how quiet it was. You can literally hear the savannah breathe. And the view from up there is insane. You get to see patterns you’d never spot from the ground, like the V-formations of hippos in the river and the ‘highways’ animals create in the grass. I also took some pretty awesome pictures thanks to the sunrise.
