Your Ultimate Guide to the Best Camps in Masai Mara: Unforgettable Safari Experiences

Tourist at Masai Mara Camp
Just sitting back and taking it all in at our camp.

After more sunrises than I can count in the Mara, I can tell you one thing for sure: the right camp makes all the difference between a good safari and an unforgettable one.

I’m Harrison Kamau, a seasoned Masai Mara safari guide and travel writer for MasaiMaraSafari.Travel ltd. For years, I’ve had the privilege not only of guiding guests through this incredible landscape but also of helping them find that perfect home base. The one they’ll talk about for years to come.

In this article, I will share everything you need to know to plan your Safari trip to the Masai Mara and recommend the best camps to book in all categories.

Types of Safari Camps in Masai Mara: Find Your Perfect Match

Before we dive in, let’s get one thing straight: when we talk about ‘camp’ in the Mara, we’re not talking about roughing it. Not at all! The options here range from high-end movie-worthy luxury to comfortable down-to-earth bases. Let me walk you through the main types so you can find your perfect match.

Luxury Tented Camps in Masai Mara

Picture a tent so roomy it feels more like a hotel suite than a campsite, with a proper king-sized bed, crisp Egyptian cotton sheets, and a private bathroom with a steaming hot shower. That’s the luxury tented camp experience.

Camps such as Angama Mara, Cottars 1920 safari Camp, and Kicwa Tembo Tented Camp redefine wilderness accommodation with their excellent service and amenities while maintaining an authentic safari feel. Expect spacious canvas tents with elegant furnishings, private verandahs overlooking wildlife-rich plains or rivers, en-suite bathrooms with hot running water, gourmet dining, and personalized service from dedicated safari guides.

Pro Tip: A tip I always give my clients is to ask luxury camps about their guest-to-vehicle ratio. The best camps are those that offer private or semi-private game drives, giving you more flexibility and a far more intimate wildlife experience.

Budget-Friendly Safari Camps

Believe me: You really don’t need to break your bank to have an incredible Masai Mara experience. Some of my most cherished safari moments happened while staying in surprisingly affordable camps.

I have a soft spot for Kambu Mara Camp. Their guides are some of the friendliest and most knowledgeable I’ve ever met, and they go above and beyond to make every game drive feel personal and unforgettable. I also love the Enkorok Mara Camp, which has eco-friendly options close to wildlife, and the Osero Enarau Camp, which offers affordability with cultural experiences.

The downside with budget-friendly safari camps is that they have limited amenities, a higher guest-to-vehicle ratio, and their staff may be stretched across many guests, meaning they can’t give as much one-on-one attention.

Family-Friendly Camps in Masai Mara

Want to be the family hero? Take them on safari. Want to survive it? Pick a camp that entertains the kids and lets the adults sip mimosas.

Traveling with kids requires special considerations, and several Masai Mara camps excel at creating experiences for all ages:

  • I get great feedback about Mara Intrepid’s Camp Adventurers’ Club. From the club, kids get to learn things like wildlife tracking and survival skills.
  • Mara Serena Safari Lodge is another great option, with its spacious rooms with stunning views and family-friendly amenities, including a pool
  • Basecamp Explorer has eco-conscious family tents and activities, including Maasai-guided nature walks
  • Governors’ Camp has specially designed family tents with breathtaking views across the plains

Many family camps offer flexible meal plans, supervised activities, and specially designed game drives for shorter attention spans.

Pro Tip: Double-check if the camp is fenced. Yes, unfenced camps offer thrilling proximity to wildlife, but a fenced camp like Mara Serena Safari Lodge can provide extra peace of mind for families with kids.

Romantic Camps for Couples

Imagine this… You and the love of your life, wine in hand, sharing stories and laughter as the sun sinks behind acacia trees. The sounds of the wild rise all around you- a hyena barking in the distance, crickets chirping just outside your room… And for a few perfect moments, it feels as though the world has slowed down… just for the two of you.

If you’re honeymooning, celebrating an anniversary, or just looking to reignite the spark, these camps make it effortless to fall in love all over again.

Porini Lion Camp: Last year, I had a young couple stay here, and they couldn’t stop raving about the place. Between the private game drives, bush meals, and the secluded location, they said it felt like stepping into their own little safari bubbles.

I have also heard excellent things about Sand River Masai Mara, where spacious tented rooms, luxurious furnishings, and private butler services make for a truly indulgent stay. And the Neptune Mara Rianta Luxury Camp, which has stunning views of the Mara River with resident hippos

The Kambu Campers is amazing too, and it has a 3-day romantic safari package with private safaris in open-sided Jeeps, sundowners with wine, and stargazing under the African sky.

Eco-Friendly Camps in Masai Mara

I’ll be honest: I get a little giddy when I find a camp that’s luxurious and eco-friendly. Basecamp Explorer is one of those gems, built from local materials and fully solar powered. I also love how Kicheche Mara Camp blends comfort with sustainability, and how the Elephant Pepper Camp has a recycling policy and supports conservation.

And then there’s the Porini Lion Camp, which somehow manages to be both private and eco-conscious with solar power and conservation initiatives.

Location Guide: Where to Stay in Masai Mara

My guests have stayed in camps and lodges all over the Mara, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the perfect choice depends on the type of safari experience you want.

Camps Near Sekenani Gate

Staying near Sekenani Gate is a smart option for those who want to be right in the heart of the action. The gate is the main and most popular entrance to the reserve, which means you not only get quick access to wildlife hotspots but also to the local markets and Maasai villages. Some of my favorites here include;

  • Mara Sopa Lodge: I often recommend this for families. It’s comfortable, has great views, and is located in a prime location within the Masai Mara.
  • Keekorok Lodge: Last year, I stayed in one of Keekorok’s standard rooms, and honestly, it was such a great experience. I used to wake up at dawn just to watch the sunrise from my little balcony, then sometimes request an in-room breakfast so I could enjoy it while listening to the bush come alive. My favorite thing about the place? Definitely the hippo pool. In the evenings, I’d wander down the boardwalks and there they’d be… granting, splashing, and doing all the things that hippos do.
  • Kambu Mara Camp: This one I recommend to guests who want a comfortable experience without the luxury price tag. It is located 15 minutes from the gate and borders two conservancies, Naboisho to the north and Naishula to the west.

Insider Tip: The area near Sekenani Gate has two small shops (dukas) where you can get simple things like sunscreen, a charging cable, or a local SIM card.

Camps Near Oloololo Gate

If Sekenani is the busy front door everyone uses, think of Oloololo as a more private and quiet secret back entrance. The gate is the gateway to the famed Mara Triangle and, more importantly, private conservancies like Mara North.

One of the things I really appreciate about the conservancies is that they are partnerships between the camps and the local landowners. Because of this, guest and vehicle numbers are limited, meaning a more intimate and crowd-free safari experience.

Some of my favorites in this exclusive corner of the world include:

  • The Mara Big Five Lodge
  • Fairmont Mara Safari Club
  • Entim Mara Camp
  • Oltome Mara Magic Resort

5 camps in Mara North Conservancy

Three reasons staying at a Mara North lodge is probably the best safari decision you’ll ever make? One, there are only a handful of camps spread around this huge area, so the game drives will never feel crowded, and you’ll often have sightings all to yourself. Two, the wildlife here is incredible, and even the Great Migration passes through here. Three, the conservancy allows activities prohibited in the main reserve, like guided bush walks and night game drives.

Some of my favorite camps here are:

  • Karen Blixen Camp
  • Ngare Serian
  • Kicheche Mara Camp
  • Elephant Pepper Camp
  • Royal Mara Safari Lodge 10

The conservancy is a collaborative effort between member camps and over 800 Maasai landowners, offering a lower-density safari experience with one room per 700 acres.

Camps With Great Views

If it’s great views you’re looking for, great views you’ll have

For breathtaking Mara River views, I highly recommend staying at the Neptune Mara Rianta Luxury Camp, which features 20 luxury tents directly overlooking the river.

Governors’ Camp is another excellent option. I’ve had some of the most magical river crossing views here. I’ve also made some of my deepest reflections here, while sitting on the deck, watching as elephants wander along the riverbank.

For plains views, check out the Spirit of the Masai Mara, a family-owned and run boutique lodge surrounded by wildlife and the countryside. The lodge features 10 air-conditioned suites, all fitted with modern amenities like a private bar and a beautiful en-suite bathroom.

The Mara Siria Tented Camp is another guest favorite. This one is for those who want to experience a true wildlife safari off the beaten track. It features 16 tents and cottages and is eco-friendly too! .

Experiences and Activities: Beyond Game Drives

While wildlife viewing is the main attraction, the best camps offer experiences that connect you even more deeply to the Mara.

Hot Air Balloon Safaris

I’ll be honest, this one is magical. You’ll be awakened while it’s still dark, at around 4:30 or 5 am, and driven to the launch site, where the balloon is already being inflated. Minutes later, you’re floating above the Mara … The silence is striking, broken only by the occasional roar of the burners. And the sunrise? Truly, truly, bewitching. You’ll love the views too… of the landscape and wildlife.. And the feel of the cool breeze against your skin.

This premium safari experience is offered by the Governors’ Camp Collection (Little Governors’ Camp, Governors’ Camp, and the Governors’ Private Camp). The Mara Explorer, Mara Intrepids, and Mara Serena Safari Lodge also offer the activity.

Cultural Experiences

A mixture of blood and milk… Would you drink that? How about Nyama Choma (roasted meat)? Or would you rather listen to the deep, rhythmical chants of Maasai warriors as they perform the Adumu dance? You can also join in on the dance if you’d like…. Yes?

Many camps offer visits to Maasai villages where you can learn about the local culture, participate in traditional dances, and buy handcrafted souvenirs. Some of these lodges and camps include the Il Ngwesi Lodge, Basecamp Explorer, Porini Camps, and the Saruni Lodges.

Walking Safaris

To experience a Mara walking safari is to experience the wild on nature’s own terms. The crunch of grass beneath your feet, the gentle caress of the wind against your skin, the distant call of a hornbill… it is magical!

Camps in private conservancies offer guided walking safaris for a more intimate connection with the land and smaller wildlife often missed on drives. These camps include Mara North’s Kicheche Mara Camp, Saruni Mara, and Elephant Pepper Camp… Naboisho’s Naboisho Camp and Mara Bushtop… And Olare Motorogi’s Mara Plains Camp and Olare Mara Kempinski.

Night Game Drives

A night game drive reveals the hidden world of the Mara. Elusive predators like lions and leopards, and nocturnal animals like genet cats and aardvarks.. That is what the night promises.

Please note: this activity is only allowed in private conservancies within the Mara. For an unforgettable experience, I recommend Kicheche Mara Camp, Elephant Pepper Camp, Saruni Mara, and the Mara Bushtops.

Amenities and Features: Comfort in the Wilderness

Camps with Pools.

After long game drives, pools are a welcome relief. Some of my favorites include:

  • Fairmont Mara Safari Club
  • Masai Mara Sopa Lodge
  • Entumoto Safari Camp
  • Spirit of the Masai Mara
  • Ashnil Mara Camp7

Camps with Spa

A spa massage? Sign me up: any day, anytime. To lie down in your open-air tent, as the scent of wild sage drifts in on the breeze, as a therapist works out the knots on your shoulder, is poetic. And don’t forget the background music of birds and howling jackals. Some of the camps offering spa massages and treatments include;

  • Governors’ Camp has a spa tent with natural products
  • Mara Bushtops Luxury Camp has hot tubs with drinks of your choice
  • Fairmont Mara Safari Club has full spa services

Best Time to Visit Masai Mara Camps

While the Masai Mara is great for wildlife viewing all year round, timing makes a difference:

  • July-October: Peak season with the Great Migration, river crossings, and predator action
  • November-December: Short rains, lush landscapes, and newborns
  • January-March: Quiet season, great birdwatching, and fewer tourists
  • April-June: Long rains, some camps close, but those that stay open offer discounts

Safety Tips for Masai Mara Camps

First off, your safety is the number one priority for any camp staff. They live here and know what they’re doing. That said, here are a few things to keep in mind.

  • Be mindful of your surroundings near your tent, don’t camp under large trees or near ant hills
  • Bring enough water and food, especially in more remote camps
  • Pack for variable weather, temperatures can drop dramatically between day and night
  • Carry a basic first aid kit for minor injuries or insect bites
  • Be aware of the services available at your camp and have a plan in place for emergencies.

How to Choose the Right Masai Mara Camp

Consider these when selecting your accommodation:

  • Budget: Set your spending limit, price often reflects exclusivity and amenities
  • Travel style: Do you prefer luxury amenities or bush experiences?
  • Group composition: Traveling with family requires different facilities than romantic getaways
  • Location: Consider proximity to migration routes, river crossings, or specific wildlife areas
  • Conservation ethics: Many travelers prioritize camps with strong sustainability practices and community involvement

Harrison Kamau, Travel Writer and TRA-Licensed Guide for MasaiMaraSafari.Travel Ltd

The Mara is a place that constantly inspires me. The stillness of dawn, the sheer power of the great migration, elephants at sunset… I mean, it’s impossible not to feel moved by the sheer beauty all around.

I have been writing about the Mara for over a decade now and have captured its moods in countless forms. I have shared its stories, given voice to its struggles, and shed light on its fragility.

But my connection to the Mara is not only through words; I have guided hundreds of travellers across her landscapes for over a decade, helping them see her the way I do (with reverence, wonder, and respect).
