Indulge in the Wild: Bush Dinners, Masai Mara
After nearly a decade of guiding, I’ve learned that no moment captures the soul of the wild quite like a bush dinner. It’s pure magic. I am talking linen-covered tables set beneath acacia trees, chefs working their magic over open flames, and, just beyond the firelight, the deep, rumbling call of a lion.
In this guide, I’ll take you behind the scenes of this timeless safari tradition, highlighting what makes it special, how we set it up, and what you should expect. Ready? Let’s get into it.
So… What Exactly is a Bush Dinner?
Imagine eating out… But this time, you’re actually out… out as in you’re surrounded by nature, where you can see zebras, wildebeests, elephants, and all that gamut. The first time I went for one, I was literally speechless. We drove out to a clearing in the middle of the wild, and I just went, “Wait, we’re eating here?”.
Long story short, it was extraordinary.
So, to answer your question… A bush dinner is an outdoor dining experience, held in the wilderness or other natural settings. Unlike restaurant meals, these outdoor dining experiences take place in carefully selected wilderness locations where the savannah is your dining room and the starry sky your ceiling.
This, I like to say, is not just dinner: it’s a multi-sensory journey that captures the real essence of an African safari.
The Magic of Wilderness Dining
Picture this. You’re seated there, in the heart of the Mara, eating away at your finely grilled lamb. Suddenly, you hear a lion roar in the distance. Scared? No. You’re thrilled. Absolutely thrilled. Because it reminds you exactly where you are.
What makes Masai Mara bush dinners so special is the atmosphere. You get to:
- Dine under the stars with only lantern light on your table
- Listen to the distant lions and nocturnal insects
- Enjoy the warmth of a crackling bonfire that adds both comfort and authenticity
- Be in the wild while being served luxury service
Many camps offer traditional bush dinners with Maasai warriors performing authentic dances and songs, adding a cultural dimension to your wilderness feast. These exclusive bush dinner experiences often start with sundowners – cocktails as the sun sets over the savannah – the perfect precursor to your evening meal.
Best Locations for Bush Dinners: My Favorite Spots
Honestly? You can’t go wrong when you’re in the Mara. But since I am not one to gatekeep, here are my absolute favorites.
Conservancy Experiences
I am a huge, huge fan of dinners in private conservancies like Olare Motorogi and Nabosiho. I love the intimacy and exclusivity they offer, mainly because they limit their visitor numbers.
P.S. The Mara Conservancies website has more information on these protected areas adjacent to the main reserve.
Riverside Romance
One of the most romantic dinners of my life was right by the Mara River. I remember it vividly; it was in early June, right when the migration was in full swing. I was busy sipping on my chilled Mimosa, listening to an agitated hippo grunt somewhere, when my partner suddenly went down on one knee. Around us, zebras grazed quietly, and all I could think was- this is it; the moment I’ll never forget.
Side note: Camps like Governors and Mara Serena specialize in these riverside experiences, creating romantic bush dinners that couples will treasure forever.
Savannah Splendor
And of course, the open plains. Some of the most incredible outdoor dining experiences take place on open plains with uninterrupted views of the savannah. These locations are particularly magical during full moon nights when the landscape is bathed in moonlight.
Gourmet in the Wilderness
You might be wondering…. “But is the food any good?” Oh, absolutely, and then some. I’ve had the most incredible nyama choma (Kenyan barbecue) out here in the wild. And it doesn’t stop there: salads made with fresh produce from local gardens, soups, freshly baked bread, and decadent desserts to seal the deal. They even pair wines with the courses!
Also, mobile kitchens are established, and everything from ice to fresh ingredients is transported to ensure your meal is perfect, no matter the wild surroundings.
Best Occasions for a Bush Dinner
I am of the firm opinion that any night is a good night for a bush dinner. But… some occasions become truly special when celebrated this way.
Romantic Occasions
Like I told you, I got engaged out in the wild, on a romantic dinner by the Mara River. It’s one of those things I’ll never forget. That said, private bush dinners are perfect for proposals, anniversaries, or honeymoons. Many lodges offer romantic bush dinners for couples with personalized touches like champagne toasts and custom menus.
Family Adventures
For families, a bush dinner with Maasai performances creates cultural connections and educational experiences the kids will never forget.
Group Safaris
Bush dinners for groups can be customized for larger parties, making them ideal for family reunions, corporate retreats, or special celebrations with friends. These can be arranged as exclusive bush dinners with dedicated staff to ensure everything is perfect.
Planning Your Bush Dinner: A Few Personal Tips
If I’ve convinced you (and I really hope I have) here are a few personal tips on planning the perfect bush dinner experience.
Booking
First things first, you have to book in advance, especially during the peak season (July to October).
Costs vary widely depending on the camp, location, and level of customization. Basic bush dinners start from $40 per person, while luxury bush dinners can be over $100 per person for more elaborate setups.

What to Wear and Bring
Everyone says to dress in layers, which is true, but my niche tip is about what layers. One, avoid noisy fabrics like nylon, which make sounds with every move you make. Those ‘sounds’, no matter how subtle, can mask the very sounds you are there to hear. My advice is to go for cotton, wool, or soft fleece.
Also, footwear is very important. You might be tempted to think, “We’re just sitting, so sandals are fine,”. But always, always wear closed shoes. The ground, even when swept, can have thorns. Plus, you’ll be moving quite a bit, and sandals are not fitted for that.
And last but not least, wear neutral colors to blend in and consider bringing binoculars for stargazing. Last but definitely not least, bring a camera, but no bright flashes that might disturb wildlife
Safety
Don’t worry about your safety. I know that sounds wild, but safety during bush dinners is taken very seriously by all operators. Professional guides and often Maasai warriors are present throughout the experience, monitoring the surroundings while you relax and enjoy your meal.
Also, here’s one thing I always tell my guests: please skip the perfume, cologne, or heavily scented lotion. Why? Well, these strong scents are known to attract insects, but more importantly, they mask the incredible scent of the bush at night, which you do not want to miss.
And… my biggest safety tip (I like to call this the pre-dinner sundowner tactic) is to hold off on that tonic. See how you get that gin and tonic during sundowners? Hold off on the tonic? Why? The sweetness of the mixer often attracts bees and other insects, and the last thing you want is a buzzing entourage hovering over your drink while you’re trying to enjoy the sunset.
Beyond Dinner: Complete Bush Dining
Stop at dinner? You absolutely cannot! I am a huge fan of the whole bush dining concept but there’s a load of other exciting activities that you must try. These include:
- Bush breakfasts – early morning meals set up on the plains after a dawn game drive
- Picnic safaris during full-day game drives, so you can maximize wildlife viewing without returning to camp
- Sundowners Masai Mara – pre-dinner drinks at scenic viewpoints as the sun sets
These additional experiences create a full day of dining in different wilderness settings.
Your Wilderness Feast Awaits
A bush dinner in Masai Mara National Reserve is more than just a meal: it’s a safari experience that engages all your senses. From the aromas of dishes cooked over open flames to the visual spectacle of dining under African skies, these experiences create the kind of memories that define a truly epic safari.
Whether you want romantic bush dinners under the stars or a bush dinner to celebrate with family and friends, the wilderness of the Masai Mara is the ultimate dining destination. When you book your Kenyan safari, make sure to include at least one bush dinner – it will be the best part of your journey in this wildlife wonderland.
