Hotels Actually Inside Masai Mara National Reserve (2026 Guide)
Short version: Twenty-three camps and lodges sit physically inside the Masai Mara National Reserve—not in conservancies. Inside means no morning gate queue, more hours on game drives, and animals walking past your tent. All-inclusive 3-day packages run USD 2,000 (Fig Tree, low season) to USD 10,500 (Ritz-Carlton, peak). This page covers every inside property, the 10 AM exit trap most people miss, eCitizen payment details, and which camps put you closest to river crossings.
All 23 Camps Inside the Reserve
Only properties south of the Talek River or inside the Mara Triangle qualify as “inside.” Everything else—regardless of marketing—sits in conservancies or buffer zones.
I went through the property records in March 2026:
Mara Triangle (Mara Conservancy management): 1 Mara Serena Safari Lodge
Musiara Marsh & Talek Confluence: 2. Governors’ Camp 3. Little Governors’ Camp 4. Governors’ IL Moran 5. Rekero Camp 6. Mara Ngenche Safari Camp 7. Sentinel Mara Camp.
Talek River Zone: 8. Fig Tree Camp 9. Mara Explorer Camp 10. Ilkeliani Camp 11. Emboo River Camp 12. Entim Mara 13. Naibor Camp
Central Reserve & Sekenani: 14. Keekorok Lodge 15. Mara Intrepids Camp 16. Sarova Mara Game Camp 17. Matira Bush Camp 18. Mara Expedition Camp 19. Ashnil Mara Camp
Sand River Zone (Southern Reserve): 20. The Ritz-Carlton Mara Safari Camp 21. JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge 22. Sala’s Camp 23. Sand River Masai Mara (Elewana)
Seasonal Mobile Camps (Migration Season Only):
- Wilderness Mara (rebuilt from what was Little Governors’ mobile unit)
- Angama Safari Camp (not the lodge on the escarpment—the mobile camp inside the reserve)
These mobile camps operate July through October and vanish in November. If you’re searching “exclusive seasonal Mara camps,” these are what high-end operators won’t list publicly.
Spotting a conservancy camp: If a property advertises “Night Drives” or “Walking Safaris” on their own land, they’re outside the reserve. Both activities are banned within park boundaries.

2026 Wildlife Update: The Marsh Pride in Musiara Sector has split into three sub-groups, and their territory now overlaps heavily with the Bila Shaka pride near the marsh edges. Guests at Sentinel Mara and Governors’ Camp are currently seeing more predator action—maybe 40% more kills—compared to the Central plains. Pride territories shift, but as of March 2026, Musiara is where things are happening.
Why I Started Tracking Inside vs Outside
September last year. I drove guests from a camp they’d booked online. Website said “Masai Mara.” Technically accurate—it sat in a conservancy adjacent to the reserve.
We hit Talek Gate at 6:15 AM. Eight vehicles ahead of us. GAVA e-slip verification. Vehicle checks. By 6:45 we entered. By 7:20 we reached the crossing point other guides radioed about.
Empty riverbank. Herd crossed twenty minutes earlier.
45 minutes from camp to wildlife. At Rekero or Fig Tree—both inside the reserve—they’d have watched that crossing while we queued.
Conservancy camps offer things inside camps can’t: night drives, walking safaris, fewer vehicles. But if you’re counting game drive hours, being inside the boundary matters.
Narok Side vs Trans-Mara (Different Ticket Systems)
The Masai Mara is split between two governing bodies, and their payment systems don’t communicate.
Trans-Mara (West) = Mara Triangle Managed by the Mara Conservancy. Enter via Purungat Bridge or Oloololo Gate. Since 2024, the Triangle operates under a 100% cashless mandate—no cash at all at the gates. GAVA e-slip or nothing.
Narok Side (East) = Main Reserve Managed by Narok County Government. Enter via Sekenani, Talek, or Ololaimutia gates. GAVA payment required, but some gates still accept backup payment if systems fail.
Cross-river tickets: Tickets are NOT automatically cross-compatible. If you pay at Sekenani (Narok side) and your guide drives across the Mara River into the Triangle without pre-clearance, you may get charged again at the Triangle checkpoint.
Stay at camps that handle Trans-Mara permit transfers for you. All packages through us include this.
2026 Park Fees (GAVA eCitizen Portal)
The Masai Mara switched to the GAVA eCitizen system in 2024. Tickets run 6 AM to 6 PM—not a rolling 24-hour window as older websites claim.
| Category | Jan 1 – Jun 30 | Jul 1 – Dec 31 |
|---|---|---|
| Non-Resident Adult | USD 100 / 12 hrs | USD 200 / 12 hrs |
| Non-Resident Child (9-17) | USD 50 / 12 hrs | USD 50 / 12 hrs |
| Child Under 9 | FREE | FREE |
Print your E-slip before arriving: Network at Talek and Musiara gates drops constantly. Don’t try paying via phone data at the gate. Download and print your GAVA E-slip 48 hours before arrival. Screenshot it too. Sekenani has Safaricom coverage; other gates are hit-or-miss.
Pay via: KWS eCitizen Portal — use only the official ecitizen.go.ke domain. Several copycat sites charge triple and look like scams.
The 10 AM Departure Trap
Narok County enforces this strictly now.
If you’re staying inside the reserve and want a morning game drive before leaving:
- Exit the park by 10:00 AM
- Cross the gate sensor at 10:05 AM and the eCitizen system charges you another full day (USD 100 or USD 200)
- It’s automated. Rangers can’t override it.
Most inside camps schedule departure-day breakfast at 7:00 AM so guests clear the gate by 9:30. Ask about this before booking.
The 12-hour ticket math also confuses people. Enter at 2 PM on day one, you pay for day one. Quick morning drive on day three before your flight? You pay for day three. Make sure any quotes you’re comparing count the same number of park days.
Hotels by Location Inside the Reserve
Musiara Marsh & Talek Confluence
The Musiara Marsh is where BBC’s Big Cat Diary filmed for years. The Marsh Pride—now split into three sub-groups—still patrols this territory.
| Camp | Tents | 2026 Low | 2026 Peak |
|---|---|---|---|
| Governors’ Camp | 37 | USD 623/night | USD 998/night |
| Little Governors’ Camp | 17 | USD 750/night | USD 1,150/night |
| Governors’ IL Moran | 10 | USD 950/night | USD 1,550/night |
| Rekero Camp | 9 | USD 860/night | USD 1,450/night |
| Mara Ngenche Safari Camp | 10 | USD 800/night | USD 1,300/night |
| Sentinel Mara Camp | 12 | USD 905/night | USD 1,200/night |
The Governors’ properties share guides. If you book Little Governors’ but want a specific guide from the main camp, they’ll usually arrange it. I learned this when a guest requested John Osano—he drove over from main camp to collect them.
Talek River Zone
You’ll hear hippos all night from these camps. Crocodiles bask on the banks during the day. Hyenas start up around 3 AM.
| Camp | Tents | 2026 Low | 2026 Peak |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fig Tree Camp | 72 | USD 250/night | USD 450/night |
| Mara Explorer Camp | 10 | USD 850/night | USD 1,350/night |
| Ilkeliani Camp | 17 | USD 340/night | USD 660/night |
| Emboo River Camp | 10 | USD 500/night | USD 800/night |
| Entim Mara | 12 | USD 550/night | USD 950/night |
| Naibor Camp | 7 | USD 750/night | USD 1,200/night |
Fig Tree flooded in April 2024. Heavy rains swept through the Talek. They rebuilt within weeks. River camps flood maybe once a decade; they recover fast.
Central Reserve & Sekenani
Open grassland with scattered acacia. Fewer trees means you can spot predators from further away.
| Camp | Style | 2026 Low | 2026 Peak |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keekorok Lodge | Historic, 100+ rooms | USD 350/night | USD 650/night |
| Mara Intrepids Camp | Family-friendly | USD 380/night | USD 880/night |
| Sarova Mara Game Camp | Near Sekenani | USD 330/night | USD 550/night |
| Matira Bush Camp | Budget tented | USD 280/night | USD 450/night |
| Mara Expedition Camp | Luxury mobile-style | USD 1,100/night | USD 1,850/night |
| Ashnil Mara Camp | Near crossings | USD 620/night | USD 980/night |
Keekorok has a hippo pool on property. Actual hippos within lodge grounds. Some guests skip afternoon drives just to watch them. Pool is busiest around 4 PM when hippos surface.
Sand River Zone (Southern Reserve)
Down near the Tanzania border. The migration enters here in July and stays through October. You won’t see as many vehicles this far south.
| Camp | Style | 2026 Low | 2026 Peak |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ritz-Carlton Mara | Ultra-luxury, 20 suites | USD 3,500/night | USD 4,200/night |
| JW Marriott Mara | Luxury lodge | USD 1,675/night | USD 2,600/night |
| Sala’s Camp | Classic luxury, 7 tents | USD 1,450/night | USD 2,690/night |
| Sand River (Elewana) | Elegant tented | USD 897/night | USD 1,076/night |
The Ritz-Carlton is now the crown jewel of the Sand River sector. Butler service, private plunge pools, a photography studio. I’ve sent two clients. Both called it extraordinary. Both also said they didn’t see more wildlife than guests at Fig Tree. The difference is service and exclusivity, not animals.
Mara Triangle
Just one lodge inside all 510 square kilometers. The Mara Conservancy runs this side, not Narok County. You’ll notice fewer vehicles almost immediately.
| Camp | Style | 2026 Low | 2026 Peak |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mara Serena Safari Lodge | Hilltop, 74 rooms | USD 310/night | USD 600/night |
Enter via Purungat Bridge or Oloololo Gate. Architecture mimics traditional Maasai village—circular rooms, local materials. Heated pool overlooks the Mara River far below.
Downside: you’re far from the main crossing points along the eastern Mara River. On the other hand, vehicle density here runs maybe 8% of the Narok side.

Gate Details That Trip People Up
M-Pesa for Small Expenses
Park fees go through GAVA eCitizen. But small expenses at the gate require Kenya Shillings or M-Pesa:
- “Cleaner” toilets at Sekenani: KES 100 (~USD 1)
- Cold water from local vendors: KES 50
- Emergency phone credit: Available via M-Pesa
Gate vendors don’t accept USD or credit cards. Load M-Pesa before leaving Nairobi, or carry small KES notes.
The 120-Minute Transit Option
If you’re staying at a boundary camp (Basecamp, Tipilikwani) and flying out via Musiara or Serena airstrip, you don’t need to pay USD 200 just to reach your plane.
Have your guide request a Transit Ticket at the gate. You get 120 minutes to cross the reserve without a full day’s charge. Most guides don’t mention this unless you ask.
Gate Hours
6:00 AM open. 6:00 PM close. If your vehicle is moving inside the reserve at 6:15 PM, the camp gets fined KES 10,000 (~USD 70).
Staying inside the boundary: at 5:55 PM you’re watching a leopard, by 6:05 PM you’re back at your tent. No rush.

River Crossing Positioning
Where your camp sits determines how quickly you reach crossings. Price tier doesn’t.
Good positions:
Entim Mara — The camp is named after the Entim crossing point. Some guests have watched crossings from their tent verandas during peak migration.
Rekero Camp — At the Talek-Mara confluence. Guides can be at main crossing points in under ten minutes from camp.
Ashnil Mara Camp — Mid-range pricing but sits near several active crossing points. Good value during migration.
Mara Ngenche — Both rivers converge here, so wildlife tends to funnel through.
Further from crossings:
Mara Serena — Excellent lodge, wrong side of the park. Main crossing points are 45+ minutes away through Purungat Bridge.
Keekorok — Works well year-round for general game viewing. Not close to the river.
Sand River camps — The migration grazes here, but actual crossings happen north of this zone.

Mara Simba: The Exception
Mara Simba Lodge gets listed as “inside” because its entrance bridge connects directly to the park. But the rooms sit on the North Bank.
For a 100% inside experience—wildlife grazing past your tent, no fence—pick Keekorok, Ashnil, or Fig Tree. Mara Simba works fine, just know it’s technically a boundary property.
Close to the Reserve But Outside
Quality camps with private access bridges. You still enter through gates for game drives.
| Camp | Access | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Angama Mara (Lodge) | Private road from Oloololo | Escarpment overlooking Triangle |
| Mara Plains Camp | Private bridge | Olare Motorogi Conservancy |
| Karen Blixen Camp | Private bridge | Mara North Conservancy |
| Basecamp Masai Mara | Pedestrian bridge | North bank, Talek River |
| Tipilikwani Mara | Private bridge | North bank, Talek River |
Night drives, walking safaris, off-road tracking—conservancy camps can do all of that. Inside-reserve camps cannot.

What the Brochures Miss
Late September. The fine brown soil gets into everything—camera lens, sunglasses, your teeth when you smile.
A guest at Governors’ last October kept cleaning her glasses. Fourth time in an hour. She gave up. “This is just my life now.”
Then 6:30 AM and that same dust catches the first light. Everything turns amber. November finally brings rain and you realize you haven’t smelled wet grass in months. At night in your tent at Rekero, hippos arguing in the river, something rustling outside. Probably hyena. Maybe elephant.
You can’t really photograph any of that.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many hotels are actually inside Masai Mara? Twenty-three permanent camps. A few mobile camps also operate July through October, then pack up. Most properties advertising “Masai Mara” sit in conservancies north of the reserve.
What’s the cheapest camp inside the park? Fig Tree Camp or Matira Bush Camp. Fig Tree’s 3-day package starts at USD 2,000 per person (low season).
What’s the most expensive? Ritz-Carlton Mara. Peak season 3-day package runs around USD 10,500 per person.
Do I still pay park fees if I stay inside? Yes. USD 100/day January through June, USD 200/day July through December. Paid via GAVA eCitizen regardless of where your camp sits.
Can I do night drives from camps inside the reserve? No. Night drives are banned inside the National Reserve. You’d need to stay in a conservancy for that.
Trans-Mara vs Narok side—what’s the difference? Trans-Mara is the Mara Triangle, west of the river, run by Mara Conservancy. Narok side is the main reserve, east of the river, run by Narok County. Their ticket systems don’t always talk to each other.
Is Sarova Mara inside the reserve? Yes. Near Sekenani Gate but south of the boundary line.
Which camp is closest to river crossings? Entim Mara—it’s named after the crossing point right there. Rekero is about 5–10 minutes out.
What if I exit after 10 AM on departure day? GAVA charges you for a second day. Automated. No negotiating with rangers.
